The Center for Service and Community Engagement offers up numerous signature programs throughout the year for students, faculty and staff to become more meaningfully involved in the community.
An easy way to learn about different non-profits and community organizations in the St. Louis area is to attend one of two campus fairs hosted by the Center for Service and Community Engagement each year. You will be able to meet staff from dozens of groups to learn about their work and how to get involved.
Held early in the fall semester, over 70 local nonprofits visit campus to represent a range of service areas. The 2017 fair will be held Wednesday, September 13 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Quad along West Pine.
As part of SLU’s annual Atlas Week each spring, dozens of organizations engaged in advocacy, lobbying and working for social change gather in the Center for Global Citizenship to share their work with you.
Registration is now open for SLU's 20th Annual SLU Make A Difference Day!
Join more than 4,000 fellow students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and community members for this campus-wide day of service. The day begins with a kick-off program, then groups are dispersed through St. Louis for a meaningful day of service and community-building. This year's theme is "MADD About the 90's", as the first Make A Difference day was held in 1998.
SLU’s Make A Difference Day is recognized as the largest day of service in the state of Missouri and one of the largest in the nation. You can register individually or as a group with your friends or student organization. If you are a group leader, make sure you have the names and emails of all your participants before registering.
All participants receive a lunch, water and gloves (if needed). T-shirts will also be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. All groups and individual participants will receive their site information one week in advance of the event.
In partnership with the nonprofit KidSmart, our school supply drive collects the necessary supplies for children to succeed in school. Frequently requested items include pens and pencils, folders, pencil boxes, backpacks, notebooks, markers and glue. Donations go to a SLU-sponsored charter school, as well as KidSmart's Push for Pencils program, a community-wide effort that aims to better prepare the 90,000 St. Louis area schoolchildren who cannot afford these basic supplies.
Yearly dates: Mid-July through mid-August
The Blue Santa toy drive collects toys for SLU's annual Christmas at SLU celebration. Children from the neighborhood are invited to visit campus for a night of holiday-themed games, activities, food and a visit with Santa Claus when each child receives a present given during the drive. Toys are collected from University departments for children in primary school, with extra toys being delivered to St. Louis public schools, after school programs and CSCE community partners.
Yearly dates: Late-November through early December
Our annual clothing and toiletry drive collects basic necessities from University departments to distribute during an event supporting Open Doors and its efforts to assist those experiencing poverty and homelessness in St. Louis. The greatest needs include professional attire for job interviews, simple household items such as towels and linens, and hygiene items like soap, shampoo and toothbrushes.

SLU’s Campus Kitchen is an on-campus student service program was the first ever service site for the national nonprofit organization, The Campus Kitchens Project. Students use on-campus kitchen space and donated food from on campus dining providers to prepare and deliver nourishing meals to the local communities.
If you are federal work study eligible and also have a desire to serve your community, you can participate in SLU's Community Service Federal Work Study program. If eligible, you can work up to 15 hours per week at a nonprofit agency and get paid $10 per hour. Potential jobs include tutoring children, coaching, environmental work and arts and culture activities.

The Vocational Inquiry Through Advocacy and Service (VITAS) program provides students who are engaging in community service and social justice advocacy a chance to explore how that work will influence their lives after graduation.
