Research

Research is a vital component of the undergraduate curriculum in Saint Louis University’s Department of Chemistry.

While research is required for the Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, you can also choose research as an elective in the Bachelor of Arts programs. Typically, you will begin your research during your junior year, although especially interested students may begin as early as their freshman year. Some research opportunities in the School of Medicine and Center for World Health and Medicine are available. Contact Chuck Kirkpatrick for more information on these opportunities.

Research is carried out under the close supervision of a faculty mentor and has the following goals:

  • The formation of your knowledge of chemistry
  • The development of your confidence
  • The development of your ability to think independently
  • Successful creation of new knowledge
  • Your presentation of research at a conference
  • Publication of your research in a scientific journal

The College of Arts and Sciences and the chemistry department's development fund provides monetary support for undergraduates to attend professional meetings and present their research results. Undergraduate students have presented projects at regional and national meetings, including those of the American Chemical Society.
